Best places to take a road trip this summer in Ontario

June 17th, 2008

road trip

Summer’s once again upon us, and that means that it’s time again for that great Canadian tradition to commence: the road trip. Although one of the major aspects of a road trip is the journey, it’s also important to end up at a pretty nice destination. It can be hard to know where to begin when planning your trip, as Ontario has a lot of interesting places to visit, so we at CAA have compiled a list of some of the “must-sees” this province has to offer.

Niagara-on-the-lake

Offering a wide selection of cultural attractions like art galleries and museums, Niagara-on-the-lake is a great choice if you’re looking to take a nice romantic weekend trip away. If you decide to go to the region, plan on playing 18 holes on one of the great golf courses in the area, and then top off the day with a wine tour and tasting.

Algonquin Park

If you’re looking for more of an outdoor vacation, then Algonquin Park is a great place to take a road trip. The Park allows you the opportunity to experience the wilderness of Ontario, and if you’re lucky, there’s always the chance that you’ll spot a moose, wolf or black bear! There are numerous places to camp and canoe, and if you’re not into roughing it, there are a number of lodges to stay at.

Kingston

Kingston is a lovely town with stunning 19th Century limestone architecture. Offering tons of great restaurants and fabulous boutique stores, Kingston is a great place to take a break from regular life. The harbourfront is breathtaking and is a great spot to do some sailing. While you’re there, be sure to check out the Haunted Walk of Kingston, which offers you the opportunity to see some of the more ghastly aspects of the historic town.

Ottawa Valley

Looking for more of an adventure? The Ottawa Valley offers some of the best whitewater rafting in Canada, or if you prefer to stay on land, you can explore the over 400 kilometres of ATV trails in Renfrew County. After you dry or dust off, hop back into the car and cruise up to the Capital and check out some of the activities to do there. See the changing of the guard on Parliament Hill or take a tour of the Peace Tower. Ottawa is full of exciting things to do, and is a perfect destination for any road trip!

Whether you’re heading down to the Niagara Region, or up through the Ottawa Valley, Ontario is full of interesting, exciting things to do. So this weekend, when considering your plans, think about taking a road trip and discovering a part of Ontario that was previously unknown to you. You’ll be pleasantly surprised with what Ontario has to offer.
