Paths to Wisdom
Is it time you head “back to school?”
by Tina Richardson
Yes, you read correctly – back to school! But really, what does this have to do with travel? Lots I say, as there are multitudes of ways you can enrich your life by travelling and acquiring new skills. Opportunities are endless and some you will even find close to home…
Do you yearn to embrace your inner chef? Rather than reading about it online, consider throwing yourself in by taking a cooking lesson while you’re travelling. It’s the perfect way to truly be immersed in a culture. Not to mention your friends will thank you for it when you return and throw the world’s best dinner party!
I don’t know about you, but I’ve always fancied the idea of surfing. When I worked in California, I marveled at those who donned their wetsuits after work and got out there and boogied. Did you know it’s possible to attend Surf School? Programs vary in length, but imagine days filled surf lessons and in your off-time living “la vida loca.”
Growing up, did you fancy the idea of attending an Ivy League school? Strolling through campuses you had only seen in movies…well, it’s never too late. Many universities will offer off-season programs to foreigners who wish to broaden their horizons. Now, that’d be something to write home about!
A regular yoga practice does wonders for the mind, body and soul, but have you ever wished you had more time to devote to your practice? From shorter yoga retreats to in-depth yoga teacher training, the sky is the limit. How cool would it be to hobnob with other yogis and learn from spiritual gurus? Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned yogi looking to hone your practice, there is an option for you. From local retreats to exotic far-away lands there is a spot for you to “namastay.”
How about doing a good deed for a village in need, while learning a few life skills in the process? There are wonderful opportunities out there that allow you to truly get to know the locals, while helping them to build houses, schools and community buildings.
“Habla español?” Your language skills in a foreign tongue may be limited, but imagine how immersing yourself could really up the ante! Part of your days on a language learning excursion are typically spent in a classroom setting while the remainder is entails experiences in the community – the best of both worlds.
Whether you choose your destination based on what you want to learn or vice versa, the world is your oyster. In the end, it’s not really about what you do but rather about the community you immerse yourself in and the friendships that are formed as a result.
