Check out our top five long-weekend road trips to take this summer:
1. Thousand Islands
Just a few hours’ drive from Ottawa lays a constellation of granite islands that dot the St. Lawrence River, from Kingston all the way down to Brockville. Enjoy the scenic journey to the Thousand Islands National Park of Canada, with its postcard-pretty shoreline offering plenty of picnic areas – the perfect respite after a day behind the wheel. Don’t forget to pack a pair of binoculars: this rugged archipelago is home to a multitude of rare species not found anywhere else in the country.
CAA Travel Tip: Stock up on gear for the road at your nearest CAA Travel Store. From sunglasses to hats, to travel publications and maps, all you have to do is show your CAA card for instant savings and to earn CAA Dollars® on your purchased merchandise!
2. Wasaga Beach
Think you’ve got to fly down south to find sand and surf? We’ve got good news! There’s no need to hand over airline fares in order to escape to powdery beaches. Grab a swimsuit and head to Wasaga Beach on Georgian Bay, the longest freshwater beach in the world! More than two million people visit Wasaga Beach each summer; in search of powder-fine sand, 14 km of fresh water, and panoramic views of the Niagara Escarpment across the bay. There are also plenty of recreational trails for hikers and cyclists.
CAA Travel Tip: If you’re travelling a far distance by car, consider upgrading your CAA Membership. If you have a Classic Membership, you can be towed up to 10 kilometres. With a Plus Membership, your limit goes up to 200 kilometres; and up to 320 kilometres with Premier. Travelling more than 10 kilometres? It might be time to upgrade.
Good food, close friends, happy memories – it’s la belle vie in Montreal. And it’s only a couple of hours away! A quick road trip to Canada’s cultural capital and you’ll be enjoying the city’s famous festivals, vibrant art shows, and fantastic culinary scene. Be sure to check out the shopping along Rue Sainte-Catherine and the French colonial architecture of Vieux Montreal, the city’s historic quarter.

Did you know that Niagara Falls is Canada’s most-recognizable attraction worldwide? Little wonder, since the Falls have the highest flow rate of any waterfall in North America, and a vertical drop of more than 50 metres. In fact, more than 168,000 cubic metres of water fall over its crest at every minute! Take a summer road trip to Niagara Falls to witness the awe-inspiring power of Mother Nature.
CAA Travel Tip: CAA Members can look forward to exclusive deals at Niagara Helicopters, where showing your card will SAVE you $15 on tickets! Don’t miss the spectacular Bird Kingdom while you’re in the area. CAA Members receive $3.50 off admission tickets!
5. New York
For true road warriors, a trip to New York is a must this summer. Although it’s best saved for an extra long weekend (or better yet, a full week off!), there’s no road trip destination as exciting as this storied city. It’s true that New York City never sleeps – and you won’t want to either, with all the neighbourhoods there are to explore and cultural institutions to enjoy, not to mention restaurants and shops.
CAA Travel Tip: If your summer road trip takes you south of the border, remember that you can get a passport photo taken at your nearest CAA Travel Store.
