Five Ways to Save Money on Gas

Prices are heating up at the pump. Cool them off with a few gas-saving tips from CAA!

The temperatures are rising, and so are prices at the pump! Ontario gas prices are approaching record highs, with forecasters predicting that the price will continue to increase over the summer.

If you’re planning a summer road trip or just out-and-about in your car, here are five simple ways you can save money on gas.

  1. Plan it out.

Make sure you know exactly where you’re going and how to get there before you set out. If you’re headed somewhere new, take a moment to familiarize yourself with the route on a map – it could save you time driving around looking for your destination, and gas. If you’re running errands, try combining them into one trip instead of making several separate outings. A little bit of foresight can go a long way toward saving fuel.

  2. Check Your Tires.

Get in the practice of making sure your tires are properly inflated, at least once a week. Under-inflated tires can increase rolling resistance. The softer a tire is, the more effort it will take to roll across a surface. Properly inflated tires are both safer and last longer.

  3. Slow Down

It’s another great reason (aside from safety) to reduce your speed – slowing down helps you save money. Speeding and aggressive driving tactics like rapid acceleration and hard braking actually decrease fuel efficiency. Give yourself plenty of time to get to your final destination. Not only will you be less stressed on arrival, but you’ll also save cash.

  4. Don’t Idle.

It’s bad for the environment, and for your pocketbook. When you idle, your mileage is effectively zero but your car is still burning up fuel, which means it’s actually operating at peak inefficiency – you’re literally going nowhere fast. Turn it off, instead. Your wallet will thank you.

  5. Use Your CAA Membership Card.

Be sure to link your CAA Membership with your Petro-Points card to EARN 20% more Petro-Points when you swipe your Petro-Points card at the pump (or at a Petro-Canada location). The savings work both ways: you can also convert 1,000 Petro-Points to 1 CAA Dollar. CAA Dollars can be redeemed toward a CAA Membership renewal, on merchandise at CAA Travel Stores, and so much more!
