Ottawa, April 30th 2013 - Revved Up to Learn: Local Teens Showcase Auto Skills CAA North & East Ontario Hosts 18th Annual Student Auto Skills Competition In an effort to increase local students? awareness about the rewarding careers that can be found in the automotive industry, CAA North & East Ontario (CAANEO) is pleased to host the 18th annual Student Auto Skills Competition at Algonquin College. Continue reading...The competition takes place on Thursday, May 2 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Algonquin College's Transportation Technology Centre (Building S), 1385 Woodroffe Ave., Ottawa. Approximately 60 students from local high schools will be attending the event, which combines skill, knowledge evaluation and a dose of friendly competition. "CAA North & East Ontario is proud to once again sponsor this fun and educational event," said Korey Kennedy, Manager of Public and Government Affairs for CAANEO. "As many high schools have had to eliminate automotive programs due to budget constraints, this friendly competition provides an opportune - and unique - learning experience for students who are considering careers in the automotive field." Youth from six Ottawa-area schools - Lester B. Pearson Catholic High School; Notre Dame High School; St. Peter High School; St. Matthew High School; St. Paul High School; and St. Patrick?s High School - will be participating in this annual challenge. In the morning, students will be tested on their theoretical knowledge of current automotive systems with a written exam. Following that, their practical skills will be put to the test in a "Pit Stop Challenge," where in teams of two the students will be timed as they change tires and conduct other auto repairs. These friendly competitions conclude with an awards presentation at the end of the day. CAA was the only Canadian non-governmental group invited to attend the signing ceremony in Tallahassee, the state capital, a recognition of our efforts on this issue. Auto Club South Inc., representing the interests of CAA, was the only witness at hearings at the Florida legislature on the repeal bill, and spoke strongly in favour of jettisoning the IDP law. CAA's actions on this file included representations to the Governor and other top state lawmakers urging that the law be amended to exempt all Canadians. Local media are invited to attend this event in order to get a first-hand look at the impressive automotive skills of these talented young people. Ottawa, April 29th 2013 - Paving the Way to Safer Roads Annual Campaign Gets Underway this Week to Determine Ontario's Worst Roads Once again looking to put power into the hands of road users, the ever-popular Ontario's Worst Roads campaign gets underway this week in an effort to determine the roads, highways and bridges across the province that are in dire need of repair. Continue reading...Now in its tenth year, CAA North & East Ontario (CAANEO) is proud to again be part of the campaign, which launches May 1, 2013 with the theme "Help Pave the Way to Safer Roads." "This campaign provides an opportunity for the public to inform their elected officials that they are concerned about the substandard infrastructure that plagues their respective communities," said Korey Kennedy, Manager of Public & Government Affairs for CAANEO. "We are encouraging motorists, cyclists and pedestrians alike to cast their ballot and have a say in order to help raise awareness regarding Ontario's deteriorating roads." Coming out of a winter season that resulted in the development of an unprecedented amount of potholes, there is no shortage of roadways across the province that are eligible to make this year's Worst Roads Top 10 list. But the Worst Roads campaign is not just about potholes; road users who have experienced incidents related to pedestrian and cycling safety, congestion, improper signage, and poor visibility are also encouraged to provide feedback. The campaign is again seeking to have senior levels of government provide Ontario municipalities with long-term sustainable funding to repair damaged and aging infrastructure, which ultimately has a negative impact on the environment, road safety and costs to road users. While the Ontario government has charged a gas tax since 1925, a dedicated fund to assist with repairing municipal roadways and bridges is still lacking. Road users can have their say by casting a ballot online at www.worstroads.ca, where individuals can view in real-time the roads that are receiving the most votes across the province. The website will be live following the launch of the campaign on May 1, 2013. Over the course of the next four weeks, the campaign - which is sponsored by CAA North & East Ontario, CAA South Central Ontario, CAA Niagara and the Ontario Road Builders' Association - will travel to communities throughout the province to reiterate the importance of making concerns about decaying infrastructure known. Voting closes May 31, 2013. CAA North & East Ontario is a non-profit membership organization, providing travel, emergency road services, insurance and advocacy for its Members. Visit caaneo.ca. Ottawa, April 2nd 2013 - CAA Applauds Repeal of Florida IDP law Governor's Approval Today Resolves Situation for Canadian Drivers in Florida
The Canadian Automobile Association is pleased that the state of Florida today officially repealed a law that made it mandatory for Canadian drivers to carry an International Driving Permit. Continue reading...The repeal comes after interventions from CAA, other stakeholders and thousands of Canadian drivers caught unaware by the IDP law, which came into effect with no notice. CAA applauds the government of Florida for repealing the law, a process that ended today when Gov. Rick Scott signed the repeal bill. "Effective immediately, Canadians in Florida can go back to doing what they have always been able to do - drive with peace of mind in the Sunshine State using their provincial driver's license," said Jeff Walker, CAA Vice President of Public Affairs. "CAA is pleased that the voices of its members and others were listened to by state officials, and that the state of Florida has removed any uncertainty." Florida lawmakers have admitted they never intended to include Canadian drivers under the law, which made it illegal to drive in Florida without a license issued by a U.S. state. The repeal process took several weeks and multiple votes in the Florida legislature. Governor Scott's signature marks the official repeal. When the law came to light in mid-February, Florida officials reacted to pressure from CAA and others within hours and said the state highway patrol would not enforce it pending a review. But it was unclear if all local law enforcement would follow suit, some Canadians were refused car rentals, especially in the first few days, and insurance companies would have been within their rights to refuse to honour policies in the event of an accident. CAA is a federation of nine clubs providing more than 5.8 million Members with exceptional emergency roadside service, complete automotive and travel services, member savings and comprehensive insurance services. CAA also advocates on issues of concern to its members, including road safety, the environment, mobility, infrastructure and consumer protection. For further information, please contact:

Ottawa, February 20th 2013 - CAA provides real picture of annual Driving Costs New tool quickly calculates yearly cost of ownership, which Canadians consistently underestimate The Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) today released a free online tool that will allow Canadians to calculate the real cost of owning and operating a vehicle easily and quickly. Continue reading...Driving Costs responds to a clear need - 90% of Canadians under-estimate the cost of owning and operating a vehicle. In fact, four in ten under-estimated the cost by $4,000 or more. As well, two-thirds of Canadians think their annual grocery bill is bigger than their car ownership costs, which is not true. Yearly ownership costs for an average compact car are about $9,500, while the average Canadian spends $5,400 on groceries a year (figure provided by Statistics Canada). "A vehicle is the second-largest expense most people have, but a lot of us are not taking into account all the expenses associated with car ownership," says Jeff Walker, CAA vice president, public affairs. "Driving Costs makes it possible for everyone to figure out the true costs of driving in as little as one minute, so they can keep them in mind when planning their household budget." A lot of the discrepancy between actual costs and Canadians' best guesses comes from not including depreciation when thinking about the cost of vehicle ownership. Canadians ranked depreciation in the bottom three when asked to list vehicle expenses in order of cost. In fact, it is one of the largest costs of ownership. Driving Costs provides yearly figures, by vehicle make, class, and province, for everything from gas to licence fees and depreciation. Users can input their own information, if they know it, to get an extremely accurate picture, or use representative figures supplied by CAA partner CarDATA Inc. to get a very good estimate of their annual driving costs. The calculator also displays the annual greenhouse gas emissions for the vehicle selected and compares them to the best-in-class for that class of vehicle. "We believe Driving Costs will be of real practical benefit to people while also helping educate all of us about these costs," Walker says. CAA's research was conducted as part of an Ipsos Reid poll of 2,000 Canadians conducted between February 4th and 11th. CAA is a federation of nine clubs providing more than 5.6 million Members with exceptional emergency roadside service, complete automotive and travel services, member savings and comprehensive insurance services. CAA also advocates on issues of concern to its members, including road safety, the environment, mobility, infrastructure and consumer protection. CarDATA Inc. designs vehicle reimbursement solutions for North American companies. CarDATA offers advice and programs that help companies reimburse their employees or clients with a fair amount based on today. For more information, please contact:
Ottawa, February 15th 2013 - CAA Update on Developments Regarding IDPs OTTAWA, February 15, 2013 - The government of Florida announced today that the Florida Highway Patrol will defer enforcement of a new law requiring Canadians to have an International Driving Permit to operate a vehicle in Florida. Florida says this is pending an assessment of the jurisdictional authority the state has to enforce the law they recently enacted regarding IDPs. Continue reading...The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has also sent a message to other law enforcement agencies in Florida, encouraging them to follow suit with their plan to defer implementation pending this review. CAA is grateful that the state of Florida has responded to efforts by CAA and thousands of concerned Canadians to review this issue. In addition, the Canadian insurance industry, through Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC), has released the following information regarding this situation today: "IBC is contacting Florida officials directly for more information on the nature and duration of this reprieve, as well as the state's intentions for implementing the regulatory change and the law's potential applicability to Canadian residents. It appears that at least temporarily, things are moving in the right direction in Florida. Enforcement of this new law in Florida may not take place at least for now. The timeframe for this deferral remains unknown, and the implications in case of another reversal based on the jurisdictional review are unknown. But progress is being made. Based on how rapidly the situation is evolving, we continue to recommend those Canadians travelling to Florida in the next few days to consider obtaining an IDP. For those who will not be travelling for some days, and those already in Florida, we advise you to wait for developments. We will issue further updates as the situation becomes clearer. CAA North & East Ontario is advising individuals who purchased an International Driving Permit (IDP) on February 13 or 14 to hold on to the permit until after their planned visit to Florida in order to ensure their safety and mitigate potential complications during their travels in that state. If the current legislation in Florida regarding the need for non-U.S. residents to have an IDP is officially repealed or amended when the State legislature sits next month, CAA North & East Ontario will then refund IDPs purchased on February 13 or 14. More information will be made available as it becomes available. For more information, please contact:
Ottawa, February 14th 2013 - Florida implements new requirement for Canadian drivers International Driver's Permits now required for Canadians driving in Florida
The Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) advises Canadians that the state of Florida has passed into law a requirement for all non-U.S. residents, including all Canadians, to carry a valid International Driver's Permit (IDP) when driving their own vehicle or a rental vehicle in Florida. Continue reading...State officials say the law was passed so that Florida law enforcement officials would not be faced with license documents in languages they could not read, but the law captures drivers from all countries, including Canada. The law now requires both a valid license from the home country or province, and an IDP. CAA has obtained the following official comment from the state of Florida regarding this change: Effective January 1, 2013, section 322.04, Florida Statutes were amended to require foreign visitors who drive in Florida to obtain an International Driving Permit in addition to their valid home country driver license. "The intent of the change in Florida law regarding the International Driving Permit was to aid law enforcement in Florida when interacting with drivers holding a license in a foreign language. The Department of Highway Safety will seek to clarify the law in the upcoming Legislative session, which begins next month, to make it clear that a license already written in English would be acceptable. Until the law is clarified, drivers should obtain an IDP," said Kirsten Olsen-Doolan, Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles spokesperson. International Driving Permits should be obtained before arriving in the U.S. Individuals should contact their home country agency for assistance. For more information, and a list of agencies issuing IDPs, go to DHSMVâ??s International Driving Permit page at http://www.flhsmv.gov/ddl/idp.html. CAA will be requesting that Florida officials follow through and amend this law. Millions of Canadians have driven in Florida for decades without incidents related to the lack of an international driving permit. In the meantime, however, CAA believes that given the law as it stands today, Canadians planning on driving in Florida should consider acquiring an International Driver's Permit. An IDP is a special document which allows motorists to drive internationally, when accompanied by a valid driver's license from their country. CAA is the only organization in Canada authorized to issue an International Driving Permit. For more information on IDPs, visit caaneo.ca/idp. Ottawa, February 12th 2013 - CAA North & East Ontario Recognizes Excellence in Local Hospitality CAA North & East Ontario (CAANEO) is pleased to announce that five hotels and three restaurants in the North and East Ontario region have been named to the prestigious CAA/AAA Four Diamond list for 2013, a testament to the excellence in local hospitality. Continue reading...Area lodgings and restaurants receiving the coveted Four Diamond Award include (number of consecutive years in parenthesis): Beckta Dining & Wine (9); Perspectives Restaurant (10); The Capital Dining Room (6); Brookstreet (10); Fairmont Château Laurier (16); Minto Suite Hotel (19); Ottawa Marriott Hotel (6); The Westin Ottawa (30). With a remarkable 30 years of maintaining a Four Diamond status, The Westin Ottawa is one of only 110 lodgings to uphold this prestigious designation for 25 or more consecutive years. The establishments in North and East Ontario that received the Four Diamond Award are part of a select group representing the highest ranks of the hospitality industry. Only 5.1 percent of the 30,000 CAA/AAA rated hotels and 2.6 percent of the 29,000 CAA/AAA approved restaurants received a Four Diamond rating, for a total of 2,289 establishments throughout Canada, the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean obtaining the honour this year. "To attain and maintain this recognition in hospitality excellence is a significant achievement that each of these establishments should take pride in," said Korey Kennedy, Manager of Public & Government Affairs for CAANEO. "CAA North & East Ontario is proud to be able to recognize these dedicated local businesses with the Four Diamond rating." CAA/AAA's rating system is the only one that covers all of Canada, the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean. Rating more properties than any other entity, professionally trained CAA/AAA inspectors use published guidelines to evaluate establishments on an annual basis. To be eligible for evaluation, properties must meet basic requirements during an unannounced inspection. Once designated as 'CAA/AAA Approved', inspectors assign each establishment with a rating of One to Five Diamonds based on the extensiveness of services, quality of the facilities and available amenities.
