Length of Time to Obtain a Passport
To avoid processing delays and lengthy line-ups at passport offices due to changing regulations, we encourage you to sort out your travel documents well in advance of travel dates.
There are new rules and fees associated with obtaining or renewing Canadian passports. As well as, tighter security measures including the new "tamper-proof" passports and more rigorous background checks.
Applicants are being warned that it will take up to 10 working days for a new passport when the application is brought in person to one of the regional offices, and 20 working days when applications are sent by mail (excluding mailing time). The Passport Office says urgent requests for passports will only be considered under "very limited circumstances".
New Child Requirements
Additionally, for the first time, children will be required to have their own passports, rather than being added to their parents. If a child's name is already on a parent's passport, it will remain valid until the document expires, however, children traveling alone will require his or her own passport.
A further note for Quebec children born after January 1, 1994: Only certificates issued by Le Director de l'etat civil of Quebec will be accepted as proof of Canadian citizenship for Quebec-born citizens.

Essentially, an IDP is a translation of your driver's licence into ten languages, which makes it very useful when travelling abroad.
International Driving Permits will be issued to persons 18 years of age or over who hold full valid Canadian provincial driving licences. This excludes provisional or learner's licences, and licences under suspension. The IDP is valid for one year from date of issue and cannot be issued for any category or vehicle which is not presently covered by the Canadian driving licence. The Canadian IDP is not valid in Canada.
You can obtain an application by either picking up an application at one of our Travel Stores or by printing the online application.
Attach 2 signed, full-face passport photographs with the application, a copy of the front and back of your Canadian driver's licence and fee of $15.00CAN in the form of a Bank draft, money order or cheque in Canadian funds drawn on a Canadian bank payable to the CAA North & East Ontario. Carnet de Passage en Douane
The Canadian Automobile Association is a member of the Alliance Internationale de Tourisme (AIT) and is authorized to issue its Carnet de passages en douane for motor vehicles to Canadian residents for touring purposes.
What is a Carnet de Passages en Douane?
|
The Carnet guarantees to a foreign government that the vehicle it identifies, having been granted temporary importation status, will be removed from the country within the time limit imposed by the respective jurisdiction or if not, that the country will be paid all duties and taxes that would be required to permanently import the vehicle. Using the Carnet is an alternative to leaving cash security deposits with foreign governments. It allows free movement and unencumbered access between foreign countries. Use of the Carnet is restricted to the countries listed on the back cover. It is valid for one year from date of issue.
|
How to Obtain One?
You can have an application mailed to you, or click here to print the application.
Submit the completed application form, along with the following
attachments:
- two photographs of the vehicle
- two signed photographs of the applicant
- a copy of both sides of the vehicle registration document
- the Carnet fee and cash deposit
Fee for CAA members $400.00 plus GST for Canadian
Residents
Fee for non members $450.00 plus GST for Canadian Residents
Deposit: $300.00 (to be used for such expenses as couriers. The
unused balance is returned once the discharged Carnet is returned
to CAA.)
A cancellation feeof $75.00 will be charged if the Applicant begins
but does not complete the Carnet de Passages application process.
Visa and Master Card accepted.
In addition to the Carnet fee and deposit, CAA requires a financial
guarantee, sufficient for CAA to meet any claims that could be made
by a foreign government for customs duties and taxes. These duties
and taxes can be levied against a vehicle when it is temporarily
imported into a country under cover of a Carnet de passages, but
is not removed or exported. This financial protection is provided
to CAA by the holder of the Carnet in the form of an irrevocable
letter of credit, a certified cheque or a money order. This financial
guarantee is held by CAA in a non-interest bearing account until
such time as the used Carnet is returned to CAA.
Amount of Guarantee
CAA calculates the amount of the financial guarantee using the value
of the vehicle and the maximum amount of duties and taxes that could
be claimed by the countries to be visited. Permanent importation
duty and tax rates may vary from 0% to over 300%, depending on the
country visited, the vehicle, and its equipment.
The Carnet, when properly discharged, will have an entry and exit
stamp for every foreign country visited. The Certificate of Location
located at the back of the Carnet must be endorsed by Canada customs,
upon your return, proving to CAA that the vehicle is back in Canada.
When the properly discharged Carnet is received, CAA will be released
the financial guarantee and balance of the cash deposit.
There are many steps involved in the process of issuing a Carnet
and it can take up to a month to finalize, but CAA will help and
guide you through the process.

It is valid for a total of 12 months from date of issue.
Where is the CCI Valid?
The CCI may be used in many European & Scandinavian countries, at campgrounds owned or operated by automobile or touring associations affiliated with AIT, FIA, and FICC. Many private camp operators, accept the CCI.
Where do I find such Campsites?
The CCI Information Guide accompanies each Card issued. The full colour booklet is packed with a wealth of information. It includes campsite listings where the CCI can be used, camping tips, general information and discount vouchers that can be used at any amusement park or museum mentioned in the guide.
Advantages of using CCI
The CCI guarantees the payment of campground fees. Some camp proprietors may accept it in lieu of a deposit of fees, to be retained until the camper leaves, and the camping fees paid.
It's other advantages include discounts on campsite fees, reservation priority, and the possibility of being granted permission to camp in state forests.
*Insurance Coverage
Each CCI issued by CAA includes third party insurance coverage.
The term "insured party" is defined as any member of a club or association affiliated to the AIT holding a valid Camping Card International. Coverage also includes any member of the insured's family normally forming part of the household, or any person travelling in the same private vehicle.
A summary of the insurance coverage, the conditions of issue and the campers code is provided with each card, along with the CCI Information Guide.
