Vehicle theft is a crisis in Ontario. And while it’s easy to think it will happen to someone else, the rate of theft and range of vehicles means it’s impacting more and more consumers. Some areas or vehicles may seem to be targeted more often, but car theft is a crime of opportunity that thieves will grab faster than you think.  

Car thieves may use a smash-and-grab approach or employ advanced technology to steal your vehicle. But there are ways you can deter them:

• Lock your doors.   
• Store your keys in an RFID wallet.  
• Use a steering wheel lock.   
• Invest in an aftermarket immobilizer to stop relay theft.  
• Never store valuable items in your car.  
• Consider installing a port lock
• Install a GPS tracking system to aid with recovery

Car theft isn’t just inconvenient.  

• In Canada, a car is stolen every five minutes.   
• In 2023, Ontario saw a 48.2% increase in car theft, while Quebec was hit by a 57.9% increase. 

When a car is ransacked or stolen, it impacts more than your mobility and time. Stolen items, like wallets, mobile devices and car insurance can lead to identity theft. There are other costs, too. Paying a deductible and purchasing a new vehicle at higher interest rates will also impact your budget.
