Lawn Sign Slow Down Move Over Hero

CAA Asks You to Slow Down and Move Over

Did you know that nearly 100 tow truck drivers are killed every year after being struck by oncoming traffic? CAA is a leading advocate in Canada for roadside assistance workers like tow trucks, police, ambulance, and fire truck personnel who keep us safe.

Every May 10, we hold the national Slow Down, Move Over Day to bring awareness to the Slow Down Move Over law. The legislation requires motorists in Ontario to move to the farthest right lane or shoulder of the road and to stop for any approaching emergency vehicle (ambulance, police, or fire truck) with sirens or flashing lights. You must remain stopped until the vehicle has safely passed you.

Drivers approaching emergency vehicles or tow trucks with flashing lights stopped on the side of the road, must slow down, and proceed with caution. If the street has two or more lanes, drivers should change lanes (if it's safe to do so) and provide space for the service vehicle.

Our commitment to making roads safer isn’t limited to May 14. CAA’s Slow Down, Move Over lawn signs encourage everyone daily to slow down and make space for tow trucks so they can help those who are stranded.

We are excited to offer each household up to two free lawn signs at their nearest CAA store starting May 1, 2022. These will be available while supplies last. You will need to show your Membership Card upon pickup.

Promote Safe Driving in Your Neighbourhood

As a motorist yourself:

  • Slow Down: Reduce your speed to reduce the risk of collision
  • Pass with caution or pass
  • Yield to pedestrians at crosswalks: in residential neighbourhoods please be cautious of residents who are about to or already entered the crosswalk.
  • Keep a safe distance
  • Be patient
Tips For Your Lawn Signs

When installing your sign on your lawn, follow local bylaws. Position it so it’s visible to oncoming traffic, but a minimum of one meter from the sidewalk or road to avoid obstruction. On bad weather days, like strong winds or heavy rain, store the product indoors to ensure it isn’t damaged or blows away. To dispose of the sign, recycle the metal stakes and place the rest in the garbage.

Keeping our neighborhoods safe is a shared responsibility so get involved by getting your free lawn signs to promote safe driving as a CAA Member.

Hurry to the nearest store and grab your FREE lawn sign while supplies last, and don’t forget to bring your CAA Membership Card!
