What you need to know about travelling with pre-existing medical conditions

Pre-existing medical conditions don’t need to hold you back from travel anymore. CAA Travel Insurance offers emergency medical plans with a Pre-Existing Medical Condition Rider1 so you can travel safely, sooner.

Ready to go? Here are a few things you’ll need to know.

What is a pre-existing medical condition?

A pre-existing medical condition is any sickness, injury or condition that received medical care, including advice, diagnosis or prescribed medication. It also includes a condition where further treatment was recommended before your trip.

Does travel insurance cover pre-existing medical conditions?

Yes, it does, but there are some things you need to consider. CAA Travel Insurance covers pre-existing medical conditions that have been stable for three to six months prior to your travel date. A Pre-Existing Medical Condition Rider amends your travel insurance policy to shorten the stability period. With a Pre-Existing Medical Condition Rider, you only need to be stable for seven days before your departure date.

How long does my health need to be stable to get travel insurance?

Age limits can depend on the type of plan you purchase. For travellers 69 and under, your condition must be stable for at least three months before each departure date (though this may depend on the type of plan you purchase). For travellers 70 and over, your condition must be stable for at least six months before your departure date (though this may depend on the type of plan you purchase).

What travel medical plans offer pre-existing medical conditions coverage?

CAA Travel Insurance offers a Pre-Existing Medical Conditions Rider to eligible travellers. You can add it to your single trip, multi-trip, or vacation package plans that include emergency medical insurance.
