Top 8 tips for safer winter driving
1 Minute Read
As temperatures drop, it's clear that winter is just around the corner! To ensure your car is ready for whatever the season throws at you—be it rain, sleet, hail, snow, or slush—follow CAA’s essential tips to winter-proof your vehicle:
Test your car battery
A healthy battery should measure at 12.6 volts or higher when fully charged. When the engine is running, this should increase to between 13.7 and 14.7 volts. Take advantage of CAA’s Mobile Battery Service, which can test, replace, and recycle your battery. Learn more about the program here.
Consider a block heater
If temperatures dip below -15°C, using a block heater can help reduce stress on your engine and warm up the interior more quickly.
Use winter tires
Unlike all-season tires, winter tires remain flexible in cold conditions, providing better traction on icy roads. All-season tires start to lose their elasticity around -7°C.
Schedule a maintenance check
If you’re planning long road trips, take your car to a mechanic for a thorough check-up or schedule an appointment with CAA Auto Repair.
Top-up windshield washer fluid
Ensure your windshield washer fluid is rated for -40°C, and keep extra fluid in your car for emergencies.
Keep your gas tank full
Maintaining at least a half-full gas tank helps prevent freezing in the gas line and allows you to run the engine for heat if you get stuck.
Review your vehicle’s manual
Check your manual for winter maintenance recommendations to ensure you’re following best practices.
