Have you booked your hotel and flight? Check! As you prepare for your next trip abroad, remember to check if you need a travel visa. Canadians must have one when visiting some countries. The last thing you want to do is arrive without one and be denied entry.
To help you prepare for your next getaway, here is everything you need to know about travel visas.
What is a travel visa?
The Government Of Canada defines a travel visa as ‘’an official document, usually stamped or glued inside a passport, giving permission from a foreign authority for you to enter a country.’’
What is a tourist visa?
Tourist visas are official documents issued to foreign visitors, typically for short-term trips. Every country regulates its visa policy for tourists, so if you visit multiple countries on one trip, you may need several types of visas issued by different consulates or embassies.
They differ from other types of visas because you cannot work, do business, study, or become a permanent resident.
When and why do I need to get them?
Certain countries worldwide require you to have a tourist visa before you enter the country. If you get on a plane and land in a country requiring tourist visas without getting one before your trip, you will be sent on a return flight back home.
Some countries, like Japan, only require a tourist visa if you’re staying in the country for more than 90 days. Therefore, before you leave, research the countries you’re visiting to confirm you have all the correct documentation.
What countries require a tourist visa?
Many countries worldwide require Canadians to hold a tourist visa before entering. Some of the most popular destinations are Australia, Thailand, Turkey, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Egypt.
The European Union has announced that many European countries will implement a tourist visa (ETIAS) requirement starting in 2024. For more information about where you need ETIAS and how to apply, visit the ETIAS website.
To check if you need a tourist visa, visit the Government of Canada website. It lists the visa requirements for every country and the application process.
How can I get a visa?
Head to the destination’s consulate or embassy to get a travel visa. The application process, fees, and documentation differ for each country, so it’s important to research what you need before submitting your travel visa application.
The Government of Canada website provides information on consulate and embassy locations near you and visa requirements for specific countries.
