Summary

  • Cruise fares include accommodations and main dining, but extras like Wi-Fi and excursions add cost.
  • Pre-cruise expenses such as flights, hotels, and travel insurance should be factored into budgeting.
  • Strategic booking during Wave Season or shoulder periods can reduce overall vacation costs.

Cruises make it easy to unpack once and explore multiple destinations in a single trip. Because inclusions vary by cruise line, knowing what's covered in your fare and which expenses to budget for can help you plan with confidence.

Whether you're considering an ocean voyage or a river cruise, here’s how to budget for a cruise and make the most of your vacation.

Are cruises all-inclusive?

A cruise fare typically includes accommodations, meals in main dining venues, onboard entertainment and transportation between ports. However, expenses such as Wi-Fi, specialty dining, shore excursions, gratuities and premium beverages may cost extra.

The good news is that not every cruise line takes the same approach. Some offer a more inclusive experience, with many of those extras bundled into the fare from the start. If you prefer knowing more of your vacation costs upfront, these cruise lines may be a good fit.

River cruises often include additional amenities such as excursions, beverages and gratuities in the fare, while ocean cruises typically offer more flexibility to customize your vacation with optional add-ons.

Cruise lines such as Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, Seabourn Cruise Line, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises often include amenities such as Wi-Fi, beverages, specialty dining and select excursions as part of the cruise fare.

Other cruise lines take a more flexible approach. Holland America Line, Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean frequently offer promotions that can include extras such as Wi-Fi, beverage packages, specialty dining or onboard credits, although inclusions vary by sailing and promotion.

When comparing cruises, look beyond the advertised fare. What's included can make a significant difference to the overall value of your vacation.

A cruise fare covers the basics, but costs such as gratuities, shore excursions, drinks, specialty dining and travel to your departure port can add to your overall vacation budget.

Before you even step on board, consider costs such as flights, transfers, parking, pre-cruise hotel stays and travel insurance. If you're flying to your departure port, arriving a day early can help avoid the stress of travel delays.

Once your cruise begins, many expenses can be planned for in advance. Gratuities, for example, are often charged daily per guest, either prepaid during the booking process or automatically added by the cruise line, so they’re worth including in your budget from the start.

Shore excursions are another common expense, whether that’s a guided city tour, a wildlife encounter, or an outdoor adventure. Professional photography and onboard shopping are also available for travellers who wish to enhance their vacation experience.

Deciding which experiences matter most to you before you book can help you build a budget that reflects your travel style.

Is it worth buying a beverage package on a cruise?

Many cruise lines offer alcoholic beverage packages that allow travellers to prepay drinks and budget that expense before they sail.

Because package pricing and inclusions vary by cruise line, it's helpful to compare the cost of a package with what you would typically spend on beverages during your vacation.

Some ocean cruise lines offer multiple package options, including plans focused on soft drinks, specialty coffees and non-alcoholic beverages.

Before you buy, check what’s already included in your cruise fare. Most cruise lines offer complimentary drinks such as water, coffee, tea, lemonade, and iced tea throughout the day. Beverage packages are typically purchased for the full length of the cruise and can be added before departure.

Your itinerary can also make a difference. Travellers on cruises with several sea days tend to spend more time on board and may be more likely to use a beverage package.

On cruises with frequent port stops, you may spend less time on the ship and have fewer opportunities to take advantage of what is included. The best approach is to consider your vacation habits and choose the option that best aligns with your travel style and budget.

One of the best times to book is during Wave Season, which typically runs from January through March, or during Black Friday sales. These promotional periods often bring added incentives and special offers from cruise lines.

Timing your trip strategically can also help reduce costs. Travelling during shoulder season often means lower fares and fewer crowds than peak travel periods.

Booking early often provides the best selection of itineraries, departure dates, and stateroom categories.

CAA Members who book through CAA Travel may be eligible for added benefits with participating cruise partners. Depending on the sailing, these can include onboard credits, stateroom savings and exclusive offers.

How can a CAA Travel Agent help with your cruise budget?

A CAA Travel Agent can help you compare total costs across cruise lines, find the best value, and build a cruise that fits your budget from day one. If you're not sure what's worth it and what's not, they can walk you through your options before you book.
