3 in 4 Canadians are skipping dining out, report says
1 Minute Read
When Canadians need to cut back on spending, restaurant meals are often the first to go. According to the 2025 Foodservice Facts report from Restaurants Canada, 75 per cent of people across the country are dining out less, citing affordability as their main concern.
This decline is especially pronounced among younger Canadians—the report shows that a whopping 81 per cent of people aged 18 to 34 are now eating out less frequently.
Changing eating habits
Overall, Canadians are spending less per capita at restaurants, opting for practical options amid a cost-of-living crisis. While overall restaurant visits are down, Canadians are eating 7.6 per cent more lunches at quick-service restaurants, as return-to-office mandates mean people are seeking convenient midday options.
At the same time, 65 per cent of Canadians say they replace a traditional meal with a snack at least once a month. This habit is even more common among millennials and Gen Z, with many skipping meals at least once a week.
“Cost of living concerns are hitting everyone right now, especially younger generations,” said Sara Hamdy, Research Analyst at Restaurants Canada and one of the report’s authors. “Canadians still want to dine out or order in, but they are looking for more value for their dollar when they do.”
Ordering delivery remains popular, with 64 per cent of Canadians reporting that they have bought takeout in the past six months. Gen Z is leading this trend, while older generations are less likely to choose delivery.
French fries remain favourite menu item
The report also highlights a shift in Canadians’ favourite menu items. While still the most ordered category, French fries, potatoes, sweet potatoes and onion rings saw the biggest year-over-year decline in popularity, dropping 0.7 percentage points to 14.9 per cent.
To make these occasional treats more affordable, many Canadians are utilizing rewards programs to get the most bang for their buck. CAA Members get 10 per cent off at spots like New York Fries and Harvey’s, helping them enjoy favourites without breaking the bank.
