Top things to do in Ottawa: Tips from REDBLACKS legend Brad Sinopoli
2 Minute Read
Brad Sinopoli is a name that resonates deeply with Canadian football fans. The retired wide receiver is not just an Ottawa REDBLACKS legend but a two-time CFL Most Outstanding Canadian award winner.
Though his days on the field are behind him, Brad has found a new way to stay connected to the game he loves. For the past few years, he’s been fieldside and behind the mic with Brent Wallace, a retired TSN sports reporter, doing halftime commentary during REDBLACKS home games.
But Brad’s ties to Ottawa go beyond football. After making the city his home during his professional career, he's grown to love its charm and community. Whether giving play-by-play analysis or exploring the local scene, his passion for Ottawa runs deep. CAA Magazine caught up with Brad to hear his top things to do in Ottawa, from outdoor adventures to festivals.
A city that's easy to love
Born and raised in Peterborough, Ontario, Brad found a new home in Ottawa throughout his football career. The REDBLACKS veteran attended the University of Ottawa, playing football for the Gee-Gees during his studies. After being drafted by the Calgary Stampeders in 2011, he returned to Ottawa in 2015, joining the Ottawa REDBLACKS.
"There's just a feeling here—you can't quite put your finger on it," he says. "It has a small-town feel but with everything a big city offers," he shares.
Exploring the great outdoors
Brad grew up fishing with his father, whose enthusiasm for the great outdoors inspired him to immerse himself in Ottawa's natural beauty and endless opportunities for exploration and adventure.
"You can get anywhere in 30 minutes, whether you're going to Gatineau Park or local lakes," he says. The city's proximity to nature is a major draw for Brad. Through his fishing charter company, Sinopoli Fishing, he appreciates Ottawa's rivers and lakes for their fishing opportunities.
Ottawa is also home to countless trails and scenic spots, perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. "It's got all the outdoor stuff we need," Sinopoli says. Plus, it has great sports!"
Brad’s top local picks
As a proud Ottawa resident, Brad loves sharing his favourite ways to explore Ottawa's gems. "Anywhere you go, there's something fun to do," he says, encouraging others to take the time to explore all the city has to offer.
From discovering new trails to taking in a sports game, Ottawa has so much to offer for residents.
He also recommends visiting one of Ottawa's most iconic landmarks—Parliament Hill. "I love how you can walk up to Parliament, stroll around the grounds, and look over the cliff—it's so unique," he shares.
Seasonal favourites
Ottawa’s four distinct seasons—and the festivals and activities that accompany each—are a natural starting point for exploring. Whether exploring the Ottawa Farmers Market, taking in a show at Blues Fest, or enjoying Winterlude, Brad says there is always a family-friendly adventure year-round.
Winterlude, one of Ottawa's most iconic festivals, runs from January 31 to February 17, 2025. The city transforms with stunning ice carvings, snow sculptures, and activities at hot spots like Sparks Street, ByWard Market and Jacques-Cartier Park.
Another winter favourite is skating on the Rideau Canal, Canada's largest skating rink—which has been off-limits due to mild weather in recent years. "Hopefully this year, we can skate longer than 10 days," he laughs.
"We have so many beautiful places here,” he notes, “and it's just about taking the time to find and appreciate them."
