Summer hits the capital region, and the days are longer, so take advantage of the sunshine and get outside. It’s a great time to explore new trails with your furry companion and breathe in the fresh air.
There are forested paths, epic lookouts and waterfront views around the city where you can bring your furry best friend. Check out these seven dog-friendly trails around Ottawa, but remember to check your dog for ticks for a few days after your adventure. And don’t forget their leash and a portable water bowl!
Chapman Mills Conservation Area

Location: 253 Winding Way, Nepean, ON

Escape the bustling city within this 23-acre conservation area with easy trails along the Rideau River. Here, you can marvel at incredible shoreline views and wetlands, and there is no shortage of things for your pup to sniff as you wander. Plus, there are lookouts and boardwalk sections with interesting interpretive panels.
Sheila McKee Park
Location: 1730 Sixth Line Rd., Dunrobin, ON
Length: 2 km

You’ll discover one of Ottawa’s lesser-known gems along this forested trail loop. Within the park, mini waterfalls trickle down the rocky escarpment, speckled with evergreens coming through the cliff edges. It is a peaceful spot to take a moment to relax as you admire the water or splash around a bit with your furry friend.
Beaver Trail
Location: Moodie Dr., Nepean, ON K2R 1G8
Highlighted Trail: Beaver Trail — 2.7 km loop

Stony Swamp is the largest forested area in Ottawa’s Greenbelt, featuring several scenic trails, including the Beaver Trail, which winds through forests, wetlands, and boardwalks. The area is rich in wildlife and perfect for short or long adventures with your leashed dog, offering both easy and moderate routes.
Morris Island Conservation Area

You don’t need to drive far to find a vacation-worthy spot featuring six kilometres of trails around an island, picnic areas and a canoe launch. If you have an adventurous canine, pack a picnic and spend the day exploring a waterfront forest. Multiple trail loops of differing lengths mean you can make your hike longer or shorter, depending on your fitness level. If you visit in the early evening, you can catch a stunning sunset view from a bridge by going left at the trailhead toward Old Voyageur and Miner’s Trails. Watch for wildlife, including an abundance of slithery snakes.
Champlain Trail
Location: Gatineau Park, Gatineau, QC
Length: 1.1 km loop

Admire one of the best views in Gatineau Park, where you can catch a spectacular sunset. By starting at the Champlain Lookout parking lot, you can explore the top of the Eardley Escarpment and look out over lush valleys and trees. For those looking for a longer trek, Trail 1 B, down the street from the parking lot, connects to other trail loops. You can even take an 11-kilometre route to Meech Lake and back.
Sugarbush Trail
Location: Gatineau Park, Gatineau, QC
Length: 2 km

Nestled near the Gatineau Park Visitor Centre, the Sugarbush Trail offers a peaceful, forested walk that’s perfect for you and your leashed dog. Wide, gently rolling paths make it an easy outing, whether you’re looking for a quick stroll or a quiet morning in nature.
Lauriault Trail
Location: Gatineau Park, Gatineau, QC
Length: 4.5 km

Winding through scenic woodlands and past pretty streams, Lauriault Trail is ideal if you want a longer hike with your dog. Enjoy shaded trails, beautiful gardens at the estate, and the peaceful sounds of nature on this classic Gatineau Park route.
Jack Pine Trail
Location: Moodie Dr., Nepean, ON
Length: 2.3 km loop

The Jack Pine Trail is a standout within Pine Grove, offering a well-marked, easy loop through serene pine plantations and natural meadows. This trail is especially popular with dog owners and bird watchers, making it a great pick for a leashed outing with your canine companion.
Mer Bleue Bog Trail
Location: Ridge Rd., Ottawa
Length: 1.2 km boardwalk loop

The Mer Bleue Bog Trail features a beautiful boardwalk loop through a unique boreal-like bog ecosystem right in Ottawa.
