Summary

  • Hot summer weather can pose added challenges for dogs, including staying cool and comfortable.
  • Experts advise cooler walk times, shaded routes, fresh water, and testing pavement temperature.
  • Safe swimming, tick prevention, and secure travel habits can help support dogs during summer activities.

Summer can be a great time for dogs to spend more time outdoors, but hot weather also brings added risks. Dogs are more sensitive to heat than people, and high temperatures can quickly become dangerous without the right precautions.

From walks on hot pavement to time spent in the backyard or car, everyday summer activities can expose dogs to heat‑related illness. Knowing what to watch for and how to take simple preventive steps can help keep dogs cool, comfortable and safe all season long.

Fun in the sun

Summer's soaring temperatures may be a great excuse to hit the beach, but these temperatures also come with risks such as heatstroke, sunburn, and dehydration. Thankfully, there are many ways to keep your dog cool, healthy and happy.

On hotter days, walk your dog early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the sun is less intense. On these walks, be mindful to check the pavement temperature; if it is too hot for you to touch, it is too hot for their delicate paws. Walking your dog in grassy, shady areas will also help protect them.

Not all dogs are meant for heat, so if a breed is prone to breathing issues, go at their pace. Similarly, if your dog is not used to strenuous activity, summer is not the best time to push their limits.

Make sure that if you leave your dog at home, the temperature is at a breathable, cool level. They should be left with air conditioning or cooling mats on particularly hot days. They will also need plenty of fresh, clean water to avoid dehydration.

Water safety

Many of our furry friends will dive into any body of water they can get paws on; water safety should be a top priority to ensure they have a great time.

Water safety starts with deciding where to take your dog to swim. Choose an area that allows dogs and has calm water. Be mindful of any area with undercurrents or large waves.

You should also monitor water contamination levels to check for high bacterial counts, as swimming in polluted waters can cause health issues. Similarly, ingesting too much saltwater can cause illness, so knowing the type of water your dog is swimming in is essential.

After finding the right swimming spot for your pup, you will want to ensure you're equipped with a life vest. These lifesaving devices can help pets who get tired or get into trouble in the water. Have a blast swimming with your best friend, and ensure you never leave them unattended in the water.

Hiking along

Hiking is a very popular summer activity enjoyed by owners and dogs alike. Unfortunately, critters and toxic plants also thrive in the summer.

The Ontario Humane Society recommends that you talk to your vet about flea and tick prevention, as well as heartworm and Lyme disease, which are more common in the summer.

In addition, you can keep your pet safe by paying close attention while hiking in the woods or long-grass areas. Look out for poison ivy, poison oak and other toxic plants. After hikes, inspect your dog for bug bites, stings, rashes or ticks. Keeping your dog's fur brushed and free of mats can also help you spot issues early.

Travel tips

Travelling with your furry best friend can lead to long-lasting memories. To ensure a smooth trip for everyone involved, consider checking the local vaccination rules for the place you are visiting. If travelling with an RV or car, ensure your dog is always securely fastened and never left unattended in a hot vehicle.

Summer is full of endless possibilities, and keeping your dog safe, healthy, and happy is easy with the right tools and tricks. Pet insurance can provide an added layer of peace of mind so you can focus on what matters – fun in the sun with your pup.
