Have you ever wondered what it was like to relax on a cruise ship, sailing through the rivers of Europe? Soon, you won't have to imagine it. Celebrity Cruises is preparing to launch a new fleet of river cruise ships in 2027, offering travellers a luxurious new way to explore the continent.

The company announced it will launch 10 new ships under a program called Celebrity River Cruises. The ships will sail along major rivers such as the Danube and Rhine, stopping in cities such as Vienna and Cologne. Guests will pass through vineyards, castles, and UNESCO World Heritage sites along the way.

"Celebrity River Cruises will bring the quality and sophistication of our Edge Series Ocean ships to the most iconic rivers, starting with Europe," said Laura Hodges Bethge, president of Celebrity Cruises, in a press release. "We are thrilled to bring these experiences to the river and combine them with authentic, destination-rich itineraries that will give our guests an experience unlike any other."

What to expect on board

The ships will vary in size based on the river route, but all will be inspired by Celebrity's award-winning Edge class ocean ships. The ships are being designed with both luxury and cultural immersion in mind. According to the company, travellers can expect 360-degree views, locally inspired menus, and shore excursions focusing on food, culture and history.

"We're thrilled to announce our entry into the river cruises market through our Celebrity Cruises premium travel brand," said Jason Liberty, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group. "Our guest and travel partners should expect us to do what we do best, innovate and elevate the river cruise experience as we meet the growing demands for an intimate, culturally enriching travel experience."

Guests can take guided tours at each stop to learn about the area’s history, food, and culture.

River cruises allow travellers to explore the heart of Europe, not just the coastlines. Ships dock near city centres, making it easier to visit landmarks, try local food and experience the culture up close.

The trips are designed to cover more ground in a shorter time without repacking or taking flights between stops. Guests wake up in a new city each morning, ready to explore.

Celebrity Cruises says its new itineraries will focus on culturally rich destinations and more immersive travel experiences.
