A dream is a wish your heart makes, and a trip to France could make them come true. For the Disney fans who wish they could step into the stunning scenes from their favourite movies, a magical vacation awaits in France.
From picturesque provincial towns to winding Parisian streets, Disney has a long-standing connection to France’s cities and sweeping countryside. Walt Disney’s family originally came from Normandy, eventually adopting the name “Isigny” which became “Disney.” As a young man, France bewitched Disney, inspiring some of his most iconic works.
You can fall under France’s spell too—and experience the landmarks and settings that make these movies come alive.
Paris

Paris’s famous Haussmann-era architecture features heavily in The Aristocats, an ode to the arts and culture of the Belle Époque. Jazz-playing kittens leap from gabled rooftops to cobbled streets, highlighting the Art Nouveau-style arches and curlicued balconies of the city. Visit the Eiffel Tower and the Galeries Lafayette, built during this era, for a taste of Paris’s unique flair.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame, an adaptation of Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel of the same name, follows a bellringer with dreams of seeing the world. The Notre Dame Cathedral is the star of this story, an iconic architectural marvel that looms large over the city’s skyline.
If you’re a Ratatouille fan, you’ll want to sample the city’s world-famous cuisine. Whether you’re dining on coq au vin in an upscale restaurant or eating a croissant by the Seine, Paris is the place to be for foodies. The film also takes viewers into the city’s underbelly—the sewers—which is actually a fascinating historical attraction.

Normandy and the Loire Valley

The palaces, monasteries and châteaux of France serve as a backdrop for many of Disney’s fantastical stories of love and enchantment.
Perhaps the most well-known example is the hilltop monastery of Mont-Saint-Michel, which inspired the kingdom of Corona in Tangled. Just as Rapunzel’s castle overlooks the twisting streets and sparkling bay, the monastery perches atop a tidal island that is often only accessible via a bridge. As you climb the many stairs and admire Mont-Saint-Michel's dramatic shape against the sky, you’ll be transported into a world of glowing lanterns, dances in the town square and flashes of golden hair.

The Loire Valley is home to some of France’s most famous châteaux, like the Amboise Royal Château and the Château de Chenonceau. One such castle, the Château de Chambord, provided inspiration for the Beast’s castle in Beauty and the Beast. As the largest in the Loire Valley, Chambord’s palatial white walls and intricate columns stand out against a backdrop of 52.5-square-kilometres of grounds.

Alsace

In the opening scenes of Beauty and the Beast, Belle wishes for “so much more than this provincial life,” longing to explore the world beyond her quiet village. But if you’re a Disney fan, a quaint town in Alsace is exactly where you want to be.
This region along the border is where French and German influences meet. Medieval stone bridges, timbered houses and rolling hills made Alsace utterly enchanting for Walt Disney.
Does the central fountain in the village of Eguisheim look familiar? It evokes the fountain where Belle dreamily sings of Prince Charming with her nose in a book. Riquewhir’s colourful buildings also provide the perfect storybook backdrop for your adventures in the great wide somewhere.

Strasbourg, named the UNESCO World Book Capital in 2024, is the perfect place to feel like you’re in one of Belle’s prized stories. Climbing flowers, canals, and cobbled streets wrap around landmarks like Barrage Vauban and the lanes of Petite France.
