You're en route to your dream destination, but first comes the airport. It might not be anyone's favourite part of the trip, but it doesn’t have to be stressful.

It doesn’t have to be that way. From navigating parking lots to breezing through security, there are plenty of ways to make your airport experience smoother and more enjoyable. We’ve got time-saving tips and hidden perks you might be missing out on.

Ready for takeoff? Here’s how to take on the airport like a pro.

Prep for comfort

Thinking ahead is the number one way to ensure a smooth experience. Before your trip, take a few minutes to check the airport map online. Familiarizing yourself with the layout will help you quickly find restrooms, food options and lounges once you arrive.

Read the instructions on your ticket, including baggage requirements. That way, you won’t be caught off guard by extra fees or have to repack your suitcase on a dime.

Wear layers so you can stave off the air conditioner chill or cool down if needed. Pack essentials in your personal item, such as a travel-size hand sanitizer for germ protection, an empty water bottle to refill once you’re past security, and snacks so you don’t have to pay for pricey airport food. Noise-cancelling headphones and a portable charger are also a must.

Reserve your parking in advance

Avoid wasting valuable time circling the lot by reserving your parking spot in advance. Booking in advance ensures a smoother arrival, letting you walk straight into the terminal without hassle. For added savings, CAA Members can save 10% off the already discounted online rate.

Remember to snap a picture of your parking spot to avoid wandering the garage when you return from your relaxing holiday.

Check in before you arrive

Begin your travels on a relaxed note by checking in online before you leave. Most airlines allow you to do this 24 hours ahead of your departure, letting you confirm details, pick a seat and either print or download your boarding pass at your leisure. Spending a few minutes online the day before you fly can save you time in line at the airport, offering both convenience and peace of mind.

When choosing a seat, avoid the back of the plane near the bathrooms if you don’t want other passengers walking by you the whole flight. If you have a tight connection or get impatient while waiting to disembark, aim for the front. If turbulence makes you nervous, the middle seats are typically the most stable.

Download the airline’s app

Take your travel efficiency even further by downloading your airline’s official app. Not only will it provide real-time updates on gate changes, boarding times and potential flight delays, but you can also access your mobile boarding pass directly within the app. You'll always have the latest information at your fingertips, right on your phone.

Make security simple

Security can be a cinch if you plan ahead. Start by consulting your airport’s website or app for real-time wait times—Ottawa, Toronto and other major hubs often update these regularly. Timing your arrival can help you keep the process stress-free.

Dress for effortless screening by wearing easily removable shoes and minimal metal accessories. Have your boarding pass and passport (or a government-issued photo ID for domestic flights) ready.

When packing, remember that liquids, gels and aerosols in your carry-on must be in containers of 100 mL or less, all placed together in a clear, resealable plastic bag. Keep this close to the top of your luggage so you can grab it when needed. If you’re travelling with a laptop, make sure it’s easily accessible as you may need to remove it.

Although CATSA has an outline of the security screening process, different airports may have varying requirements. To streamline your experience, pay attention to what others are being asked to do.

Speed through customs on your return

If you’re returning to Canada, take advantage of the option to pre-fill your customs declaration online using Advance Declaration (available through ArriveCAN). Completing your forms ahead of time can significantly reduce the time spent at customs, allowing you to proceed with fewer delays. The app allows you to do this up to 72 hours in advance.

Keep a list of receipts and know the total value of items you purchased abroad. Having this information ready will help you accurately declare your goods, ensure you stay within duty-free limits and avoid unnecessary delays at customs.

Use credit cards or memberships for extra benefits
