How to keep your cat purrfectly happy while working from home
3 Minute Read
Working remotely has its perks—like spending more time with your furry friend. But if you’ve ever had your cat sprawl across your keyboard mid-email or serenade your video calls with a chorus of meows, you know it’s not always smooth sailing. The good news? With a few thoughtful adjustments, you can create a harmonious work-from-home environment that keeps both you and your cat happy.
Take playtime breaks
Cats may seem independent, but they thrive on interaction. Taking short breaks to play with your cat can work wonders for their mood—and yours! Whether it’s a quick game of chase-the-laser or a snuggle session, these moments can help reduce your cat’s need to demand attention during your meetings. Bonus: It’s a great way to stretch your legs and recharge during a busy workday.
Cats may seem independent, but they thrive on interaction even during your busiest days. Scheduling a few short, intentional play breaks throughout the day is an easy way to keep your kitty satisfied and content. Just a quick toss of a toy, a minute or two with the laser pointer, or some gentle chin scratches between meetings can make a big difference. These brief pauses don’t need to take up much time.
And if your cat craves cuddles, even a short snuggle break can calm anxious behaviour and help you both reset. If your cat is social, consider giving them a dedicated “meeting buddy” toy so they can channel their energy positively even while you’re busy.
Create an area for your cat
When your cat claims your laptop as the ultimate napping spot, it’s time to set up a feline-friendly alternative. Cats love warmth and to be close to where the action is, so position a soft bed or favourite blanket near your workstation, ideally by a sunny window. Elevated areas are especially inviting, so a cleared shelf or window perch might become their new go-to. Try rotating spots occasionally until you find the one your cat likes best.
If your pet loves your keyboard, consider placing an old keyboard or a folded towel next to yours; it can make them feel important without compromising your productivity. Adding a scratching mat, a box to curl up in, or even a small cat tree nearby can provide entertainment and a strong sense of inclusion in your workday routine.
Keep your cat entertained
An under-stimulated cat is often a mischievous one. Enrich their day with toys that appeal to their instincts. Interactive puzzle feeders encourage problem-solving and reward your cat with a treat, keeping them mentally sharp. If your cat is fond of hunting, rotate feather wands, toy mice, and balls to keep things fresh.
For the more adventurous, set up a bird feeder outside a window to give your cat hours of safe “bird TV.” Some cats enjoy technology—consider motion-activated toys or specially designed cat apps for your tablet. Climbing towers and tunnels adds variety and lets cats burn off excess energy. Finally, remember to switch out toys every week or so to stave off boredom and foster curiosity.
Maintain a meal schedule
Routine matters to cats, and a regular meal schedule can go a long way in keeping them calm and content. Serve breakfast and dinner at consistent times to help structure their day and manage hunger-related pestering.
If you feed multiple small meals, automated feeders can help portion food and provide snacks on schedule, even when work calls run late. Prioritize nutritious foods with real, natural ingredients, and consult your vet about proper portion sizes and feeding times for your cat’s age and activity level.
Let your cat get enough sleep
Did you know cats sleep up to 16 hours a day? It’s no wonder they’re not always thrilled by the noise of your video meetings or the glare of your ring light. To help your cat get the rest they need, try wearing headphones during calls and keeping your workspace as quiet as possible. Lowering the brightness of your screens can also make the environment more relaxing for your feline companion.
Protect your pet
While working at home, we get to spend more time with our cats than ever before. But there is more to consider than just keeping them happy. We should also keep our pets healthy, which begins with CAA's Pet Insurance provider, Pets Plus Us.
