It takes passion and hard work to run your own retail store, whether it’s a brick-and-mortar shop, an online destination or both. But having a strong work ethic isn’t enough to protect you from financial risks, which is why retailer liability insurance is so crucial for your business.

Who needs retailer liability insurance?

Whether you own a small, local storefront, a franchise location or a wholesale business, all retailers need some form of liability insurance. This is because any interactions with the public, other companies or suppliers have the potential to result in damages, injuries or legal disputes. Retailer liability insurance helps reduce the risk and, in many situations, provides financial protection.

It’s also important to note that if you need a loan from a financial institution, you’ll be required to provide a valid certificate of insurance.

What are the risks, and how does liability insurance help?

Many situations pose a financial risk to your retail business without adequate liability insurance coverage. Generally, retailer liability insurance can be broken down into the following coverages:

Commercial general liability insurance

Often referred to as “slip-and-fall insurance,” commercial general liability insurance protects retailers from the common risks of an in-person shopping experience.

Think about a customer in your bookstore who slips and falls on a wet floor. Without coverage, you could be faced with covering their medical bills, rehabilitation costs, and your own legal fees if the customer sues. Typically, commercial general liability insurance covers legal and medical expenses regardless of the outcome of a lawsuit.

Product liability insurance

Any product sold by a retailer could result in an injury, an illness, or property damage – leading to a product liability claim. In addition, customers may file claims for various reasons, including product dissatisfaction or a dispute over a refund or a return.

Imagine that your hardware store sells a power tool to a customer who suffers injury due to inadequate warnings about the product’s dangers, or your food shop sells packaged or prepared food that results in a customer having an allergic reaction or food poisoning. Product liability insurance covers these types of situations, helping resolve customer complaints or liability claims.

Cyber liability insurance

Cyberattacks or data breaches are a threat to all retailers, whether they operate a physical store or are solely online. If you use a point-of-sale system, run a website, have in-store WiFi, or store any customer information, these are all at risk of being compromised.

If your gift shop has had a data breach, exposing the credit card numbers, names, and personal contact information for its customers, or a cyber-attack on your online clothing store disrupts or shuts down its online services. Cyber liability insurance helps deal with the costs associated with these types of electronic incidents.
