Going on a cruise? Here's when to book for the best deals

Are you dreaming of visiting multiple cities on a cruise, but feel mystified when it comes to the best time to book? Timing is everything when it comes to great cruise deals, cabin availability, and popular itineraries. 

Whether you're a first-time cruiser or a seasoned traveller looking to save, here’s a complete guide to help you plan your next adventure. 

How far in advance should Canadians book a cruise?  

Ocean cruises 

If you’re picturing large boats, plenty of amenities and open water, an ocean cruise is likely what you’re looking for.  

The best time to book an ocean cruise is six to 12 months in advance; however, popular destinations in Europe or Alaska should be booked further ahead. Often, but not always, ocean cruises will have the most availability, with more ships, regular sailings on more itineraries, and a higher guest count.  

Smaller ocean cruise ships book 12 to 24 months in advance. Due to the ship size, availability is limited, and prices tend to increase closer to departure.   

River cruises 

Because river cruises offer a more intimate experience, with smaller boats and fewer staterooms available, book your river cruise 12 to 18 months ahead. Reserve further in advance for peak travel periods, including November and December in Europe for Christmas market cruises.  

Expedition cruises 

Expedition cruises will take you where you often can’t go yourself—like Antarctica or the Galapagos. Because these cruises are so specialized, with fewer itineraries and smaller ships, you’ll want to snag your spot further out. The ideal time to book is 12 to 24 months ahead.   

When is the best season for popular cruise destinations? 

Alaska

For wildlife and unmatched natural beauty in Alaska, late spring to early fall is when you should go. Spring is dry and ideal for outdoor exploration. You'll likely spot the most wildlife from June and July, when fresh vegetation and migratory patterns bring animals into the open. As late summer and early fall roll in, heavier rains may dampen your cruise experience. Most cruise lines won’t sail to Alaska in the winter months. 

Europe

Shoulder season, which is April to May and September to October, is the ideal time to cruise in Europe. These months are generally great for floating down European rivers or island hopping in the Mediterranean. The weather will be warm but not too hot, and tourist crowds will be smaller than in the scorching summer months. Be aware that cultural events like Tulip Festival and Oktoberfest will be tourist hotspots at these times, so expect crowds and fuller boats if those are bucket list items.  

Caribbean

Looking to escape the snow? December through April is the best time for Canadians to cruise the Caribbean. You'll experience the driest weather with milder temperatures. Avoid hurricane season, from June to November, which is when Caribbean islands will experience the most rainfall. You should also plan around Christmas, New Years and spring break entirely if you’re looking to save money.   

When are cruise prices lowest?

Black Friday 

Cruise lines often promote savings during the month of November leading up to Black Friday. Offers can be published early in the month, too—so keep an eye out if you’re looking to snag a great deal. 

Wave Season 

Wave Season is the industry name for the period between January and March each year, when cruise lines offer their lowest prices, plus free or discounted add-ons. If you’re hoping to take a cruise for the first time, this can be a great opportunity to try experiences you may not go for otherwise. Be ready to book when the sales begin—some packages may sell out.  

Shoulder season 

Finally, to save on cruises, you need to consider when you travel, not just when you book. Avoiding high-traffic times of the year like the holidays, March break, reading week and even long weekends can save you money. To get the best deals, seek out shoulder season travel packages.
