All decked out

Done right, a new deck can be a leafy oasis, a place to entertain and an escape from the bustle of life.
Lay out your budget
Decks can be expensive, but like all things built to last, it helps to invest in a good foundation. You can upcycle and bargain hunt for outdoor furniture and decor, but don't skimp on structural materials for the deck. It's a good idea to get several estimates and consult with an architect or a designer. Consider your materials—it's a big leap in price from pressure-treated wood to tigerwood—and keep your expectations realistic.
Follow the rules
"Ninety-nine per cent of decks require a permit," says Ian Grieve of Toronto landscaping company Curbz. He advises all homeowners to check their municipal building codes before embarking on a project. "There can often be variation from one municipality to another. Local codes were created to keep us safe."
Material matters
There are few things lovelier than the scent of cedar after a rainfall or the beautiful richness of redwood. The mahogany-hued ipe (pronounced ee-pay) is another popular natural wood choice, known for its durability and natural resistance to rotting and insects. But if you're after a low-maintenance material, consider a pressure-treated wood or composite material. Aluminum and stainless steel are also popular materials for framing or handrails for rust, rot and splinter-free experience.
Deck decor
With a little creativity, the deck can feel like an al fresco living room. Consider an outdoor area rug for a splash of colour, and fill planters with pretty flowers and leafy greens. Soft seating, ottomans and plenty of pillows, available from CAA Rewards partners like Bouclair, can make it feel comfortable and cozy. And don't forget the mood lighting. Candles, lanterns and twinkling string lights are inexpensive ways to whip up whimsy and romance.
Sail shades, which come in a variety of sizes, can be hung over your deck—fastened to a structure or trees—to add a beach house feel and provide easy shelter from the sun's rays. Glass railings remain the more popular choice over solid or fenced-off options for elevated decks. "The trend to transform green spaces into outdoor living rooms with pergolas, firepits, and stylish furniture is huge right now," Grieve says. All that's left is to sit back and enjoy your outdoor paradise.
