An essential guide to navigating men’s health

The common stereotype that men don’t take as much care of their health as women, while by no means a universal truth, is unfortunately one backed up by some evidence and data. A statistical checkup of Canadian men’s health by Statistics Canada found that men were more likely to smoke and drink, less likely to eat fruits and vegetables and ultimately twice as likely to die from ‘preventable causes’ as women.

These are sobering statistics, especially considering it doesn’t have to be this way. While cultural and societal factors play a role, the truth is that many men overlook small, manageable habits that can make a big difference. From regular doctor visits to basic exercise, simple actions can significantly boost health and longevity in the long term.

Whether you’ve been delaying that checkup or pushing health to the back burner, here are a few easy changes you can start making today.

Exercise

Hitting the gym doesn’t need to mean chasing six-pack abs; sometimes, it’s just about keeping yourself whole, healthy and energized.

It’s easy to assume that starting a new workout routine needs to come alongside goals like training for a marathon or sculpting an Olympian physique. In reality, health experts generally recommend an average of 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily for adult men. Even simple activities like taking a brisk walk, a 20-minute bike ride or a quick weight-lifting circuit can boost your mood, energy and overall health. Beyond making you feel better daily, regular exercise reduces the risk of heart disease and improves mental well-being over time.

Hearing loss

Statistics Canada research has found that 43 per cent of men aged 20 to 79 experience some form of hearing loss, with a further 39 per cent suffering from tinnitus. Grim as it may sound, perhaps more shocking is that 55 per cent of men aged 40 to 79 are unaware that they even have hearing issues at all.

Hearing loss is far more common among men than you may realize. If you think your hearing may be impaired, statistically speaking, it very well may be. While ignoring the signs may be easier, early intervention prevents further decline. The good news? CAA Members can get a complimentary hearing test at Connect Hearing.

Weight

With an average weight of 194.5 lbs and standing at 5'10", Canadian males are statistically some of the largest people in the world. While happiness and confidence should never hinge on the number on a scale, it’s also true that carrying excess weight can increase the risk of health complications and, as a result, lead to higher health and life insurance premiums.

Exercise and diet are the main components of managing weight and should be the first review point if you hope to make a change. Choosing leaner meals and going for brisk daily walks can make a difference. Beyond this, re-evaluating your vitamin and supplement regimes can be another avenue for weight management.

Increasing vitamins like Vitamin D, Iron, and Magnesium can aid your body in energy distribution. Increasing your protein and fibre supplement intake can help fill you up at a lower caloric price tag. Need to stock up? CAA Members save up to 30% on Jamieson Vitamins.

Skincare

Skincare is an often overlooked yet critically important part of healthcare for both men and women. Effective skincare is not just about anti-wrinkle creams; it's about taking preventative steps early to reduce the risk of issues later in life, including skin cancers like Melanoma, which affects one in every 57 adult men..

A significant first step is taking an honest look at your daily sun exposure and use of sun protection. Consistently applying sunscreen with at least SPF 30, even on cloudy days, is one of the most effective ways to prevent premature aging, sun damage and more serious conditions like skin cancer.

Consider building a routine incorporating cleansing and moisturizing creams. CAA Members can enjoy exclusive savings at SkinCeuticals, Vichy and Sephora.
