Summer is the perfect time to pack up your camping gear and head into the great outdoors, and there’s no better companion than your dog. Your pet is part of the family, and you don’t want to leave them behind this summer.

However, camping with your dog requires careful planning and preparation to ensure both of you have a safe and enjoyable time. From choosing the campsite to camping essentials, here are some crucial tips and tricks to make your summer camping trip memorable with your pooch.

Research possible campsites

Before you and your four-legged friend take off on your next summer camping trip, you will want to research the best camping spots to bring your dog to in Ontario.

While you may have different criteria for where to go, you will want to ensure your furry friends can accompany you. You will want to research places that have dog-friendly trails and off-leash areas. If your four-legged friend and you prefer to be near the water, you will need to check what beaches and lakes you can visit.

Some campsites may have leash rules, which you may want to consider. When booking your campsite, you will want to know where your furry friends must be on a leash and where they can run free.

You’ll also want to look at how far away the campsite is and how long it will take to get there. Depending on the distance, you will want to figure out where you can let your dog out to stretch their legs and use the bathroom.

Make sure everyone is in perfect health

Before heading out on your summer adventure, ensure everyone is healthy. Plan to schedule a vet appointment before you leave, and make sure your dog is in perfect health before you go.

Your furry friend should also be up to date on all their vaccinations and using some form of flea and tick prevention. The outdoors is a great place to have fun with your furry friend, but you should be aware of ticks and fleas and know how to check for them.

While having your dog microchipped is not a requirement at most campgrounds, it is recommended. This way, if your furry friend runs off on their own adventure and you can’t find them immediately, you will be reunited quickly.

Remember to include your furry friend’s supplies when making your packing list. In addition to all your supplies, make sure you don’t forget to pack:

  • Dog food
  • Food and water bowl
  • Leash and tether
  • Prescription medication, if needed
  • Your dog bed
  • Dog first-aid kit
  • Extra towels
  • Toys
  • Dog waste bags
  • ID tags

These are some of the essential items you should bring for your furry friend on your next camping trip. Depending on your dog and where you may be holidaying, you may need other items.

If you and your furry friend are going on a canoeing camping trip, don’t forget to pack them a life jacket. You may want to invest in dog camping gear for your trip, like water harnesses, if you plan to do water-related activities.

Plan dog-friendly activities

Embarking on a camping adventure offers a unique opportunity to bond with your pet while exploring the outdoors. To ensure the trip is memorable, plan pet-friendly activities.

One of the best ways to immerse yourself in nature is by hitting the trails. Whether you’re nestled within the campground or venturing into a national park, many trails are suited for everyone. Make sure to check which trails are dog-friendly and that you bring enough water for yourself and your furry friend.

If your pet is a water lover, seek dog-friendly beaches where they can splash in the waves and play in the sand. But if you prefer a paddle on the waves, make your dog your co-captain and go on a boating trip.

If you want a more relaxed trip, share an outdoor meal with your pet around the campsite. You can also do plenty of activities with your dog to ensure a fun and memorable trip.

How to stay safe while camping

Make sure you are always with your furry friend on your camping trip. A leash is a must when walking around the campsite or on trails. When you are at your own site, ensure they are either tethered to the ground or in a kennel, so your dog stays safe the entire trip.

Ensure you and your furry friend stay safe to make the most of your trip. Just like you, your dog can overheat, so make sure you are watching for signs of overheating.

Some signs to look out for are panting, heavy breathing, restlessness, weakness, bright red tongue, dry gums, disorientation and agitation. If you notice your dog has any of these symptoms, move to a shaded or air-conditioned area and provide them with cold water.

Know your dog’s allergies and consult your vet before heading out. As you explore the great outdoors, be aware of the wildlife in the area. Research if there are any animals or plants you should watch out for or water advisories to be mindful of.

And don’t forget about pet insurance! It can be a huge help with unexpected vet bills if your furry friend gets sick or hurt and needs to see a vet.

Camping with your dog should be tons of fun! But it’s still important to prepare in advance, stay vigilant, and, most importantly, enjoy making memories together. Make sure your dog is protected on your next camping trip. Get pet insurance today by calling 1-833-323-2456 or get an online quote
