While it’s easy to focus on packing lists, itineraries, and where you’re headed next, there are a few practical details that are just as important to think about before you leave — especially insurance. It might not be the most exciting part of travel planning, but understanding what you’re covered for can help prevent costly surprises.

We spoke with CAA’s Elliott Silverstein, Director of Government Relations (Insurance), to get his expert insights on why it’s worth reviewing your insurance policies before you travel and what Canadians should keep in mind while they’re away.

Is there anything homeowners need to think about with house insurance while they’re away?

Silverstein says you don’t necessarily need to notify your insurer when you leave on vacation, but you do need to follow the rules outlined in your policy. He explains that some policies require certain precautions, such as maintaining monitoring systems or having someone check in on your home, to avoid invalidating coverage.

If a home is left empty for longer than permitted, Silverstein notes that certain damages, such as those caused by plumbing failures, may not be covered. Having a trusted friend or family member check on the house and pick up mail can help ensure coverage remains unaffected. His advice is to check with your insurance provider before you travel so you know exactly what’s required.

What other types of insurance should travellers think about before leaving?

According to Silverstein, travel insurance is often overlooked when people are planning a trip. One common assumption, he says, is that credit card insurance will cover everything, which isn’t always the case.

He recommends speaking with a travel consultant before you leave, especially for international travel, where medical costs can be extremely high. Silverstein adds that while auto insurance typically extends to U.S. road trips, travellers may want to increase their liability coverage, since claims in the U.S. tend to be higher.
