Here's why you should visit Alaska with Holland America Line
4 Minute Read
If you’re wondering if a cruise to Alaska is right for you, we have answers. According to our travel experts, one of the best ways to see Alaska is by a Holland America Line cruise, as you get a front-row view of the unforgettable beautiful landscapes without the large crowds.
Year-round, Alaska has so much to offer. If you seek warmer temperatures while on board, consider cruising in July or August. The summer months are also the best time to catch a glimpse of when ice chunks along the glacier’s edge break off and usually offer the best chances for wildlife sightings.
Holland America Line cruises visit Alaska weekly from May to September, where you see glistening blue glaciers, the breathtaking Glacier Bay National Park, and whale pods up close.
Want to hear more about an unforgettable Alaskan cruise? One of our CAA Travel Consultants, Michele Moore, travelled aboard Holland America Line for an Alaskan cruise filled with stunning views and wildlife spotting. Here’s what she said about the experience.
What was the best part of cruising through Alaska with Holland America Line?

There is so much to choose from, but it was the views! The scenery was breathtaking, both on and off the ship, and seeing the wildlife was an amazing experience. I got the chance to whale watch almost every day! There was a quiet lounge on deck 11 that had a great view of the waters we sailed through. Deck nine also had splendid views from the buffet, indoor-outdoor pool, or the outside deck. These spots were great for taking in the scenery from the cruise ship and made it easy to spot whales and other sea life.
Where did you visit?
Our first port was Juneau, which I will never forget sailing into. You can see glaciers right outside of town! Ketchikan was very pretty and historical, with great shopping and many restaurants. They even had a lumberjack show going on when I was there. We also visited Sitka, which was my favourite stop. It felt very remote and was surrounded by snow-capped mountains and many birds of prey. The village itself was small and very friendly.

The hospitality! They always made sure we were comfortable and well taken care of. There were so many amenities and activities on board. The Navigator app was super helpful, but the information about schedules and activities was also on the television and information sheets were put in the rooms daily.
Did the cruise live up to the hype?
It did, and then some. This vacation exceeded my expectations; I recommend this cruise. On board and off, there was something for everyone.
There is so much to do, both on and off the ship! Plus, being pampered on board is so easy to get used to. I loved having lunch in the dining room. The food was great, and the servers took the time to get to know us and learn our names.
B.B. King’s Blues Club was a wonderful time at night. The house band played southern-style blues, and there were people of all ages. We had a blast doing wine tastings on board with some friends, and I even won a prize!
What is something from this trip that you want to relive?
There are two things I'd love to relive. The first is seeing the blue glaciers and whales while working out in the gym. The other is seeing a pod of brilliant orca whales swimming from the Crow's Nest on deck 11.
Do you have any tips for those about to embark on an Alaskan cruise with Holland America Line?

I suggest taking advantage of the Navigator app! It is super user-friendly and helpful. You can plan onboard events, book shore excursions and even order pizza.
When packing, make sure to think about your comfort. The huge ship has plenty to explore, so bring comfortable shoes. Also, pack in layers for warmth. Binoculars also came in handy to watch wildlife whales from the ship.
The Have it All package is a great value that bundles everything you need. It combines the Signature Beverage package with Wi-Fi, shore excursion credits and specialty dining for under $70 a day. I also recommend a water package with bottles of water delivered to your stateroom for each day of your cruise. Also, enjoy lunch in the dining room; it’s the best, and give High Tea a chance; it is a fun experience.
