Top 4 Tasks to Get Your Ride Winter-Ready

Punishingly cold temperatures. Wet, slippery snow. Dangerous, blinding blizzards.

Driving in winter is no easy chore. Here’s how you can prepare your vehicle for the cold months ahead.

1. Change to Winter Tires

Despite their name, all-season tires lose elasticity at around -7°C, meaning drivers have less traction on icy roads. The rubber in winter tires doesn’t harden like all-season ones, offering a better grip. Switching over can also save you money; drivers get a 5% discount on CAA Auto Insurance premiums when they install four winter tires no later than November 20, 2020. They must be kept on the vehicle until April 15, 2020.

2. Test your Car Battery

It’s the easiest way to ruin anyone’s morning; after braving the cold to clean off your car, you get inside only to discover it won’t start. Getting your battery tested can save you that headache. Fully charged automotive batteries should measure at 12.6 volts or above. When the engine is running, this measurement should be 13.7 to 14.7 volts. Fortunately, CAA’s Mobile Battery Service will come to your location test, replace, and recycle your battery on the spot. Find out more about the program at caaneo.ca/battery. CAA Members also get up to $25 OFF on the purchase a CAA Premium Car Battery. Get a battery quote here.

3. Take Preventive Measures

An old sports adage goes, “the best defense is a good offence.” Well, it also applies to winter driving. Want to prevent your car from dying overnight or during long absences? Keep your fuel tank at least half full. This helps prevent your gas line from freezing and allows you to run your car for short periods for warmth if you get stuck. Worried about your windshield getting clogged with dirty, slushy snow? Top up your windshield washer fluid and carry extra in your car. Also, make sure it is rated for -40°C. Want to ensure your vehicle won’t break down during the coldest day of the year? Take it into the shop for a maintenance check. Find a CAA Approved Auto Repair Services facility at caaneo.ca/findgarage.

4. Don’t Put Off Needed Maintenance
