Driving on winter tires in summer? Here's why it's a mistake

Did you know driving on winter tires in summer could put you at risk?

As the temperature rises and snow begins to melt, it might feel simpler to leave your winter tires on year-round. After all, why deal with the effort of swapping them out? However, what initially seems convenient could become a costly, unsafe choice.

Here's why you shouldn't use winter tires during the summer months.

The problem with winter tires in summer

Winter tires are designed specifically for cold weather and snowy roads. Their softer rubber stays flexible below 7°C, offering better traction on icy surfaces. But while they excel in winter, that design creates disadvantages once temperatures rise.

Faster tire wear

The softer rubber of winter tires wears down much more quickly on warm, dry pavement. The heat causes the material to degrade faster, meaning you'll need to replace them sooner than if the tires were used only during the winter months.

Driving on winter tires year-round could reduce their lifespan by up to 60 per cent, requiring you to buy another set far earlier than expected.

Reduced fuel efficiency

Winter tires have greater rolling resistance on hot pavement, so your car will need more fuel. Over time, the added cost of frequent trips to the gas station can add up.

Switching to tires designed for summer will help your vehicle run more efficiently and keep your fuel costs in check.

Compromised handling and safety

Winter tires lose their effectiveness as temperatures rise. Designed with a soft, flexible composition ideal for icy conditions, they perform poorly on warm asphalt.

Their tread patterns are optimized for snow and ice and can reduce traction on rainy surfaces, particularly at higher speeds. Wet conditions also mean longer stopping distances compared to summer or all-season tires, making sudden braking or quick maneuvers more challenging.

As the weather warms, it's essential to swap out your winter tires for summer or all-season options for optimal grip, control, and safety.
