Car accidents, while highly preventable, remain alarmingly common. Here’s a clear guide on what to do if you find yourself involved in one.

Stay calm

First and foremost, take a deep breath. Check for any injuries; if someone is hurt, call 911 immediately. For minor collisions, turn on your hazard lights and safely move your vehicle to the side of the road.

Exchange information

Share your contact details with the other driver(s) involved, including your license, insurance information, and vehicle registration. Make sure to get the same details from them.

Document the accident

Take detailed notes or use your phone to capture images of your vehicle, the intersection, and the surrounding area. Additionally, gather contact information from any witnesses to the accident.

Notify authorities

If the accident is not an emergency, contact local police for guidance (in Ottawa, call 613-236-1222). Also, remember to notify your auto insurance agent about the incident.

Reach out to CAA

If you’re a CAA Member and require a tow, call CAA at 1-800-CAA-HELP (1-800-222-4357). Remember, in Ottawa, tow trucks must remain at least 100 meters away from a collision scene unless contacted by you, your insurance company, or the police.
