Do you feel like your typical one-week trip isn't enough time to relax and see all the sights? A long-stay vacation trip could be the answer.

Extended getaways are growing in popularity as they allow you to immerse yourself in the local culture, discover attractions, and establish a temporary home away from home. According to the Global Rescue Winter Traveler Sentiment and Safety Survey, nearly a quarter (23%) of respondents said they plan on having a long trip during at least one of their international vacations.

Whether you are retired and looking to escape the Canadian winter or a digital nomad who can work from anywhere, a long-stay vacation offers a unique opportunity to explore a destination in depth. If you’re considering booking a multiweek (or month) voyage, here is what you should know.

Why the rise in long-stay travel?

There are several reasons why long-stay vacations have become increasingly popular. One major factor is the rise of remote work, where people can work from anywhere with an internet connection. This newfound freedom has allowed individuals to extend their vacations and turn them into extended stays in new destinations. Some individuals even find long-stay trips more affordable than paying a mortgage or rent.

Plus, since the rise of remote work, more countries now offer extended tourist visas, allowing travellers to stay longer and fully explore their chosen destination. While there are more multi-month group trips or cruises to pick from, you can select one that suits your interest.

The desire for more meaningful travel experiences has also contributed to the increase in this type of vacation. Rather than rushing through a destination in just a week, people are now seeking opportunities to fully immerse themselves in a new culture and lifestyle.

Tips for making friends on an extended trip

Spending weeks in unfamiliar territory might have you worrying about those long, lonely nights, but fret not. You can strike up conversations with locals who can offer valuable insights into the local culture and may even become friends. Also, participating in group activities like cooking classes or sightseeing tours can be a great way to be introduced to new people and make friends while on a long-stay trip.

For an easier way to meet people, consider a group trip where you’ll enjoy the freedom of independent living spaces and tons of like-minded adventures to talk to. You’ll board the same flights and call the same accommodations home. It’s a great way to bond with people you wouldn’t have met otherwise! On a group trip, you’ll get the chance to meet each other and mingle, which makes it easy to make friends and connections from the get-go. Plus, who knows, you might make long-term friends with whom you plan future trips.

Immerse yourself in the local culture

Travelling during the off-season is a great way to experience the local culture without feeling like a tourist. In many destinations, the off-season can be just as enjoyable as peak season and often comes with added benefits such as lower prices, fewer crowds and long lines, and a more authentic experience.

Since fewer tourists are around, you’ll have more opportunities to interact with locals and get a taste of the destination’s culture. You’ll be able to fully immerse yourself in the local way of life, whether trying traditional dishes at a local restaurant or participating in cultural festivals and events. Before you depart, research or ask your travel consultant about local activities that may be occurring during your long stay, like markets, activities, or festivals.

If you’re staying somewhere with a language other than English, brush up on your language skills to communicate with the locals. Consider studying a few weeks before your trip, so you know at least some basic phrases before you arrive. During the off-season, locals often have more time to spare and are happy to chat and share their knowledge about the area.

You don't have to travel alone

If you want to enjoy long-stay travel without going solo, consider a long-stay group trip. But these types of trips aren't only for lone explorers, they are also perfect if you want to bring your partner or even a group or a friend. Look for long-stay packages where you have your own accommodation but travel with like-minded individuals sharing the same experience and flights.
