CAA North & East Ontario Launches National Day of Safety for Tow Truck Operators

Reminder to Motorists to Slow Down and Move Over – it’s the law!

Ottawa, ON, May 14, 2019 – CAA North & East Ontario (CAA NEO) is promoting May 14 as a national day of safety for tow truck operators to bring awareness to the Slow Down Move Over Ontario law that requires motorists to make space for tow trucks and all emergency vehicles that provide roadside assistance.

The Province of Ontario’s Slow Down Move Over law was modified to include tow trucks in 2015. CAA North & East Ontario reminds motorists that they can help ensure the safety of all first responders and their vehicles by slowing down and moving over so that they can safely do their work.

“Tow truck drivers deserve safe working conditions,” says Christina Hlusko, President and CEO, CAA North & East Ontario. “This winter, a member of our tow truck contract group was struck by a car while providing roadside assistance to a Member. Thankfully, there were no serious injuries, but the frightening reality is that each year in North America, approximately 100 roadside worker deaths occur. We’re reminding motorists to do their part by slowing down, moving over and avoiding the temptation of staring or ‘rubbernecking’ at roadway incidents.”

In 2017, the Ontario Provincial Police laid more than 2,100 charges under the Slow Down Move Over law. The law includes a fine of $490 and three demerit points.

CAA has long advocated for the protection of drivers and roadside assistance workers and is using this dedicated day to remind all drivers they are required to slow down and move over for tow trucks with flashing amber lights, as well as police, paramedics and other first responders.
