Sometimes, life delivers a curve ball in the form of life-threatening illness. That’s where critical illness insurance can help. If you’re diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, you will get a one-time lump sum that can be used to cover expenses such as daycare, health care support or renovations should you need to make your home more accessible. The amount received depends on the level of coverage and is usually paid as a benefit after diagnosis of a condition covered by your policy.

Critical illnesses may include cancer, heart attack, stroke and up to 22 other critical illnesses.

Insurance FAQ

Critical illness refers to a serious and often life-threatening medical condition specifically defined in the insurance policy. Typically, these conditions include major health issues such as a heart attack, stroke, cancer, kidney failure and other severe medical events.

The specific illnesses covered and their definitions can vary significantly between different insurance providers. It's always a good idea to review your insurance plan with our knowledgeable licensed advisors to ensure that you have the coverage you need.

Critical illness insurance offers comprehensive financial security during challenging times. If you're diagnosed with a serious condition, it provides a lump-sum payment that can be used flexibly to help meet your specific needs. Whether helping cover hefty medical bills, offsetting the loss of income or adapting your home to suit your new needs, this payment helps ensure that you stay financially afloat. Coverage includes a wide range of serious conditions such as cancer, Alzheimer's disease, heart attack, stroke and up to 22 other critical illnesses.

Coverage may vary among insurance providers, so it's a good idea to chat with an insurance advisor who can help you understand exactly what's included, what's not and any other specific terms.

This refers to the specific timeframe that needs to pass after the diagnosis of a covered critical illness, before you can submit a claim. The waiting period may vary depending on your insurance provider, the covered condition and the terms of your plan. Usually, this period ranges from 30 to 90 days, but it can be longer in some cases.

The benefit you can receive from your critical illness insurance is based on the coverage amount you selected when you activated your plan. Various insurance companies provide different coverage options, typically ranging from $10,000 to $1 million in Canada.
