Frequently asked questions

Yes, you do. Your Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) only covers certain emergency medical expenses. It may not cover you for non-medical or other emergency medical costs, such as a semi-private room, prescriptions, ambulance services or expenses that you may incur should you become ill or get injured while travelling. Because of the limitations of its coverage, OHIP strongly recommends that you purchase supplementary travel insurance when travelling in Canada.
If you are injured abroad, contact the Emergency Assistance Centre immediately so they can help you find the closest hospital that will accept your travel insurance.

You are not eligible for travel medical insurance if your trip is booked. Contrary to medical advice: While you are requiring kidney dialysis. If you have ever had an organ transplant (excluding the cornea). If you have received the diagnosis of a terminal illness with less than six months to live. If you have been prescribed or taken home oxygen for a lung condition in the last twelve months. If you have been diagnosed or received treatment for metastatic cancer in the last five years.

If you are 60 years or older you are required to complete a medical questionnaire.
