Frequently asked questions

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is an official document that allows you to drive in countries that recognize the permit. It works alongside your valid Canadian driver’s license by providing a standardized, internationally recognized translation of your license information.

Some countries legally require an IDP in addition to your Canadian license. Without one, you may not be permitted to rent or drive a vehicle.

International Driving Permits (IDPs) in Canada are exclusively issued through CAA. You can apply in person at a CAA Store in Ottawa, Orleans, Stittsville, North Bay, Sudbury, or Thunder Bay, or submit your completed application by mail to a CAA Store with the required documents.

CAA is the only organization authorized to issue IDPs to Canadian driver’s license holders.

No. While IDPs are exclusively issued through CAA, you do not need to be a CAA Member to apply.

The service is available to all Canadians who hold a valid provincial or territorial driver’s license and meet eligibility requirements.

An International Driving Permit is valid for one year from the date of issue.

It must be carried together with your valid Canadian driver’s license at all times when driving abroad. An IDP cannot be renewed — a new application must be submitted through CAA once it expires.

If you apply in person at a CAA Store, IDPs are typically issued within 24 hours.

Applications submitted by mail may take up to three weeks from the time your completed documents are received. Processing times may vary depending on volume and mail delivery timelines.

To obtain an International Driving Permit in Ontario, you must hold at least a valid G2 driver’s license. IDPs are not issued to G1 license holders.

Applicants must hold a full or eligible graduated license from their province or territory and apply through CAA.

You must be at least 18 years of age.

The cost of an International Driving Permit is $32 CAD.
