Understanding tornados
Although Dorothy and her ruby slippers turned tornados into pop culture, and Hollywood made entire films about them, tornados are far from glamorous. In recent years, tornados touching down in Ontario have been dangerous and destructive. Yet understanding tornados can help you prepare.
When and where tornados occur
Tornados travel quickly – typically around 70km/h, with winds up to 500km/h. They typically occur in late afternoon or evening, preceded by severe thunderstorms and very dark clouds with patches of yellow or green. They are most common in southern Quebec, Ontario and Alberta, between April and September.
