How to prepare for severe winds and tornadoes

Tornado

Understanding extreme winds

Once fairly rare, tornadoes and extreme summer storms such as derechos have become more frequent and stronger in recent years. Severe winds come in various forms, each presenting unique challenges; however, with proper preparation, you can safeguard your property and prevent expensive repairs.

When and where tornadoes occur

Canada experiences more tornadoes annually than any other country except the United States. Most occur between April and September, peaking in June and July. However, tornadoes are not limited to these months; they can occur at any time of year.

Severe winds checklist

  • Fortify your roof by choosing shingles and roofing materials designed to withstand high winds

  • Brace your roof to further reinforce the roof’s structure

  • Conduct routine inspections and maintenance of your roof for potential vulnerabilities

  • Install impact-resistant windows or storm shutters

  • Install pressure-rated doors with robust hinges and deadbolts

  • Firmly anchor items like patio furniture, barbeques, HVAC units, porches, awnings and other overhangs to the ground

  • Ensure your garage door is pressure-rated to endure high winds

  • Have a pre-existing plan in place for seeking evacuation or shelter

  • Ensure that everyone in your household knows where to go in case of an emergency

  • While on tornado watch, keep your eyes on the skies and look for dark clouds

  • If a tornado is imminent, seek shelter immediately

  • If you’re not home, get indoors if possible

  • If indoor shelter is not available, lie low in a ditch or depression, cover your head and neck with your arms and shield yourself from potential flying debris or falling objects

Get a professional to check your home’s resistance to severe winds

Hiring a licensed professional or structural contractor to inspect your home is the best way to ensure your property can withstand severe windstorms, tornadoes, or derechos.

Shingles and roofing

  • Have a professional install shingles and roofing specifically designed to withstand high winds. It is also important to inspect your roof for damage and loose shingles.

Pressure-rated doors and windows

  • A professional can install impact-resistant windows or storm shutters to significantly strengthen your home’s defenses.

Porch overhand reinforcement

  • Contact a professional to anchor porches, furniture, barbeques, HVAC units, awnings and other overhangs to the home’s main structure.
